I am board certified in both Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine. I have been a practicing physician for over 15 years. At the age of 40, I thought I was eating right and exercising correctly. I believed I was healthy, even though I had experienced 25 years of erratic blood sugars (though not having diabetes). With the help of friend and dietician, Paula Evans (paulalovesplants.com), I was introduced to whole food plant-based eating. As I transitioned to plant-based eating, my blood sugar problems disappeared. Along with feeling better, I saw my cholesterol levels drop, I was sleeping better and I started living better. I realized that providing this information in my medical practice could ultimately save lives.
Having cared for patients in both primary care and emergency care, I have seen a vast amount of disease processes that could be treated or prevented through plant-based eating and alternative medicine. While continuing to work primarily in the emergency department, the value of alternative medicine discussions has become a priority for my medical care.
I reside in Richmond, Virginia with my wife, Alexis. We have two yellow Labradors, Roman and Murray. Both animals are certified therapy dogs and work with me at my local hospital. I enjoy being outdoors, gardening and running on the local trails. I am learning to be a better cook for my wife and family. This has been a life-changing experience with a heavy dose of fun and a few mistakes along the way.
